The slash-and-burn closed to the right of way of the 220-500kV transmission grid in hot weather has accelerated the danger of fire and electric discharge.

According to the preliminary statistics by EVNNPT, many fires have occurred in the first 3 months of 2014 causing dangerous impacts on the operation of the important transmission line routs.

For example, the sugar cane field of Bien Hoa Sugar Company burnt on the afternoon 21st March was spread to the protection area of the 220kV Bao Loc – Long Binh transmission line causing an electric discharge. After being informed, the managing unit -  Eastern Transmission No. 1 under Power Transmission Company No. 4 (PTC4) and the local forces carried out fire treatment.
"Due to the big fire and dry weather, the fire control was difficult. Upto 22p.m on 21st March, the fire was controlled , causing failures to the conductor in the tower distance of 658-659" – a representative of EVNNPT revealed.
Before that, at 13h45 on 8th March, the 500kV Tan Dinh – Di Linh transmission line was affected by forest fire at the tower distance of 1.036-1.037 at Tan Uyen district, Binh Duong province. In other case, at 11h30 on 9th February in Village 3, Tan Lap commune, Kon Ray district, Kon Tum district, a fire of straw grass, tree sprout, dry pine leaves in the pine forest which is about 25 m from the 500kV Doc Soi – Pleiku transmission line was occurred. The fire burst into flame, spread almost to the right of way, location No. 135, the big wind blew the ash to the air closing to the transmission line causing an electric discharge at the outer phase of location 135.
According to EVNNPT’s representative, these are the important transmission lines supplied power to meet the socio-economic, political and domestic activities of many provinces. Therefore, any faults of transmission lines will cause a large-scale blackout , affecting seriously the operation of many factories, companies and activities of people. It takes lot of time for the managing unit to settle the problem.
"Therefore, we recommend people not to make fire close to the right of way of the transmission lines in order to protect them against fire and failure because the fire can be occurred easily in dry season, hot weather” – emphasized the EVNNPT’s representative.
Besides, EVNNPT coordinates with the localities where the transmission line passes through and other sectors, Departments in propagandizing Law on Electricity, other  documents related to the protection of high-voltage transmission grid, organizing propaganda in the mass media at all levels, delivering liftlets, posters in the densely populated areas, etc. The transmission line operators and managers should patrol and supervise regularly the transmission lines to prevent children from kite playing close to the 220kV – 500kV transmission grid.
